September 2018 Newsletter

The beginning of the new month has rolled by quickly and as such we are happy to present the second monthly newsletter for our professional computing organization. We hope that these newsletters serve to keep individuals in the loop as our members continue to develop working projects, establish professional relationships, and prepare for our first official general meeting. Details on the last of these will be elaborated on below.

Kickoff + Lightning Talks

The leadership team has been working tirelessly to prepare for our official kickoff meeting. We'll be hosting lightning talks and providing a space for technology professionals and aspiring professionals in Central Oklahoma to network. Our Vice Chair, Mr. Verbus M. Counts, has secured a location at Vault 405 (10 N Broadway) in downtown Edmond, OK. The kickoff event will be on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 6:00 PM CT. For more information please visit our Facebook event page. We encourage individuals who'd like to give a lightning talk to contact our Chair, Mr. Caleb L Power at cpower@acmcentral.org. We look forward to seeing you there!

Philanthropy: Edmond Thanksgiving Project

Members of the Edmond ACM Chapter and the UCO Computer Science Club have worked with the Edmond Thanksgiving Community Dinner organization to provide a new website as the Edmond ACM's first philanthropic project. Each year, over six hundred volunteers work to provide more than five thousand dinners for anyone who wishes to spend time with friends and family at the UCO Nigh University Center for Thanksgiving dinner. The website was created as both an information portal and volunteer sign-up dashboard so that the organizers of the dinner would have an easier time coordinating everyone who donated their time. In addition, the project is an opportunity for students and professionals to learn about the traditional LAMP stack (Linux + Apache + MariaDB + PHP). While development on the website is still ongoing, a stable version of the website can be viewed at www.edmondthanksgivingdinner.org.

Open Source Software and Cutting Edge Projects

We built the Edmond ACM Chapter for several reasons, the foremost of which was to be a place where professionals and aspiring professionals could meet and discuss the various projects that they were working on. In line with this goal, we want to be an organization where software engineers can come together to build cutting edge projects and give back to the community by furthering the advancement of the computer science industry. Our members are currently working on a few such projects, including the "Mustang" project (an upcoming proof-of-concept that combines the ideas of Big Data, hardware and software fault tolerance, and artificial intelligence using Elixir + Erlang/OTP). For more information on these projects or to propose an additional project, please email info@acmcentral.org.
