August 2018 Newsletter

We are incredibly excited to have launched the first professional chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in Oklahoma. We believe that due to Oklahoma's growing prominence as a location for technology startups and businesses, it has become necessary for there to exist an organization that strives to prepare students and professionals for the growing technological sector. In addition we wish to further the advancement of academia in the field of computer science and software engineering for the betterment of society at large.

Our Goals

We are striving to meet the following objectives through our work through our chapter.
1. Provide networking events for computer scientists, software engineers, and aspiring computer enthusiasts, both experienced and inexperienced in the field.
2. Connect students and professors by providing mentorship opportunities through workshops, hackathons, and other computer programming projects.
3. Contribute to the Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) community by working on innovative code bases and projects.

Philanthropy

The Edmond ACM Chapter has partnered with organization that brings the Edmond Thanksgiving Dinner to the Edmond community each year. On each Thanksgiving Day, food is prepared and served to the community at the University of Central Oklahoma free of charge to any person who wishes to join in celebration. Over six hundred volunteers contribute each year, and the number of volunteers is ever-increasing. It has become necessary to develop a responsive web application for scheduling purposes. The project was started at the UCO student ACM chapter but has since been migrated to the ACM Central. The languages that are being utilized include PHP, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and SQL. Anyone interested in helping with the project should reach out by emailing cpower@acmcentral.org.

General Meetings

We are working with several organizations, including various Institutions for Higher Education in Oklahoma to find appropriate places to meet to have our general meetings. We will be having meetings on the last Monday of the month, with September 24, 2018 acting as our first general meeting. The location has yet to be determined; please keep an eye on our website at www.acmcentral.org our our facebook page at www.facebook.com/edmondacm for updates.
